The land on which this building is constructed was the first developed land in Bourke , preceeding the town of Bourke, and containing the original home of William Sly. The first major flood came in 1864, when the town was evacuated to Mount Oxley and half the houses in the town were lost.
In 1875 'Telgraph Hotel ' was built, by Mathew Good who was granted a licence for a 3 sit, 4 bed and is now the oldest remaining hotel in Bourke. It has been used as a hotel, then as a boarding lodge and lastly as a motel.
Shops were constructed near the hotel in the late 1800's by Mr J Adolf, as well as banks. 1999/2000 renovations revealed that parts of the motel wings had converted these shops or banks with one believed to be the Australian Joint Stock Bank. Old signwriting that has survived indicates one of the shops to have been used by G. Sarkis, a Drapist. Restoration works exposed timber roof shingles beneath the existing iron roof, end walls of vertical timber slabs, timber framed and clad ceilings with central plaster ceiling roses.
The hotel ceased trading in about 1965 after which it became a boarding house, then a motel and art gallery, with the old Hotel section converted to additional motel rooms in 1999
